Although currently not producing vehicles, Pontiac has a unique history. A General Motors (GM) brand, Pontiac was named after Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe, and also the city where it was first produced in 1893, Pontiac, Michigan. Pontiac was mostly known for making performance vehicles. They stopped production in 2010 because of financial problems that were related to the bailout by the American taxpayers. Many GM and auto enthusiasts lament the loss of Pontiac, as it was a much beloved brand. Their most noted models were the Firebird, GTO, Trans Am, Grand Prix, and Bonneville.
