The Buick line of automobiles were the main ingredient in the initial success of General Motors. David Dunbar Buick was the founder of Buick, incorporated in 1903, although the company actually began in 1899. Buick did quite well right out of the gate, and at one point were outselling Cadillac and Ford combined. Buick was very innovative, having introduced the overhead valve engine. This also brought Buick success in racing, furthering the quality of their brand.
Buick's future was cemented when Billy Durant took over. He was the 'engine' that sold Buicks, using his already existing Durant-Dort horse carriage company and salespeople. Durant went on to form GM on the back of Buick, which certainly didn't hurt Buicks chances in the long run.
Buick kept climbing in sales and quality, known for being an incredibly reliable automobile throughout the years. Although hurt during the depression, Buick climbed back to endure with the help of Harlow H. Curtice, who was president of AC Spark Plug, owned by Buick and GM. During World War II, Buick became integral in manufacturing engines for the U.S. military for use in aircraft, tanks, and more. Buick's high quality products and style continued into the late 50s. A recession, combined with the popularity of smaller vehicles hit Buick hard until 1974, when they fought back yet again with innovative and economical engines along with engaging and stylized vehicles. By 1989 Buick was known as the leader in automobile quality, and did well in sales. Always known as 'upscale' throughout its history, Buick autos continue to be known as premium vehicles, and have included the popular crossover and SUVs as part of their current line.
